Pretty interesting. I guess I will not be saying, "Phoque" much. I have a seven year old who would probably repeat what I say, and then get in trouble at school for saying the "F" word! :)

No wonder we never learned the word for seal in high school French class... Uh-huh.

However, I knew a lot of these. #2's taking Spanish, only I keep speaking to her in French, confusing things horribly. She might be tri-lingual by the time I master the Spanish. It's just so much easier to use French!

What was worse was saying Sayonara to her Spanish teacher last week. Whoa. Talk about a bit of confusion on my end...

I'm 6-7 years old, in quebec city at the aquarium with my mom and family members...

Maman, il y a un phoque, ah un phoque, il y a un phoque...

The anglophones were looking at me like "oh my word, the girl is such a bad kid"

They were only understanding "fuck, fuck, fuck"

LMAO!!!!

Phoque and fuck, same sound, totally different meanings!!! LOL!!!

The Thai for pumpkin is also pronounced fuck. Ordering it in a market is always interesting.

I remember years ago, a talk show host asking Louie Jourdan to say anything in French. He agreed and said several sentences that made a couple women just swoon. Turns out he said something like, "Your hair is the color of hay and you smell like sea urchin", but boy, it sounded sooooo good!! I'll never forget that-- I laughed like crazy. Everything sounds good in French -- even the bad stuff!

Oh man, I think I just had a high school flash back. 3 years of straight A's.... I think some of those seemed vaguely familiar ;-)

I don't know why, but I love the word "soleil." "Phoque," eh? I may need to incorporate it into my vocabulary....

Interesting. Plage is fairly similar to playa, which is Spanish for beach.

Well Jill?
Do I not get credit for the "Seal" / "Phoque" request?
Look at all the entertainment it provided!

My favourite French word in your list is 'coquillage'. A playful sound for a fanciful object.
